$324 million Mega Millions lottery winner almost didn’t check winning ticket

San Jose store owner who sold winning mega million lottery ticket holds up sign that reads "Millionairs made here" The winner of the $324 million dollar lottery ticket bought at a San Jose gift shop has finally come forward to claim his prize.

Steve Tran is one of two lucky winners of the $636 million jackpot drawn in mid-December. The other winning ticket was bought in the Atlanta area.

Tran works as a delivery driver and occasional buys lottery tickets along his route. He had a pile of tickets stacked up on his dresser, but didn’t check them for weeks partly because he was on vacation.

“Just sitting in my house, on top of my drawer,” he said.

He recalls watching the news and hearing that two winning tickets had been sold and thinking “lucky man,” not realizing the lucky man was him.

“Everybody was anxious, looking for the person,” Tran said . “Must be a lucky man.”

Tran bought his ticket at Jenny’s Gift Shop, a Vietnamese American owned small business. (owner of Jenny’s pictured in photo.) The other winning ticket was also sold by an Asian shop owner.

This past week, Tran was in bed when he suddenly woke up at 3 in the morning with the urge to check his stack of tickets. He recalls getting a huge smile and a massive hug from his wife when he discovered he was the “lucky man.”

He later phoned his boss.

“I’m really sorry boss. I hit the jackpot. I don’t think I’m going to come in today, tomorrow, or ever.”

He plans to go on a big vacation, one that could last several months.
