Business Standard: Indian diplomats in US may be force to give raises to domestic help #StandWithSangeeta

Devyani KhobragadeIndian diplomats based in the US may be forced to either pay their domestic help minimum wage or do without the help, reports the Business Standard.

14 Indian diplomats remain based in the United States following the indictment of Devyani Khobragade (pictured) for visa fraud and for paying her maid Sangeeta Richard well below the US minimum wage.

India is considering getting around the requirement by bringing domestic help into the US on A-2 visas.

By making them government employees, they would not be subjected to US law.

However, the US could argue that domestic workers would not qualify for A-2 visas which are reserved for people engaged “solely in official activities for that government.”

You can read more about the prospect of these domestic workers getting raises in the Business Standard.
