TRD: Dozens of Chinese tenants removed from illegal units in NY Chinatown

Chinatown New YorkThe New York Fire Department has removed about 30 tenants from a Chinatown building regulators say had been cut up into 18 illegal single room occupancy units or SROs, reports The Real Deal.

The units are located on two of the  four-story 47 Bayard Street, between Bowery and Mott Streets.

American Red Cross volunteers helped to relocate the ousted residents into temporary housing.

The building’s owner Donald Nathin says he leased the space to a David Lo who then subleased the space to the tenants.

Lo could not be reached for comment.

The incident exemplifies a major issue in Chinatown, the lack of affordable housing.

You can read more about that in   The Real Deal.
