When Care.com made its initial public offering on Friday, its CEO became a member of a very small club, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Just three percent of companies which have gone public from 1996 to 2013 were headed by women CEOs.
Fewer even happen to be Asian Americans.
Care.com’s CEO happens to be Filipina American Sheila Lirio Marcelo.
Shares of care.com shot up 43% in its first day of trading from its initial public offering of $17. The company provides child care and senior care workers, as well as pet care, baby sitters and housekeepers.
“The deck is rigged against [women] at all levels,” said Vivek Wadhwa, fellow at the Stanford University Rock Center for Corporate Governance. “Women don’t get to hob nob with the board members. So the trust never builds,” he said.
