Hate flyer shocks students at UCLA

UCLAA racist and sexist hate flyer mailed to the Asian American Studies Center at UCLA has stunned the many Asian American students on campus.(photo by Clotee Allochuku)

The flyer which I will not repeat here makes references to the human anatomy in a vulgar manner and contains four letter words.

“Asian women are honkie white boy worshiping whores,” the flyer proclaimed. “This is freedom of speech. This is not a hate crime.”

The flyer also makes similarly offensive references to Asian men and Mexican women.

The UCLA Asian Pacific Coalition in a letter co-signed by the Pacific Island Student Association at UCLA, the Samahang Pilipino, Vietnamese Student Union at UCLA and endorsed by 21 other student groups both in and outside of campus said such incidents should not be allowed to go unaddressed.

“Every year, at least one discriminatory and racially biased incident occurs (at UCLA), and many more go unreported.” read the statement. “To allow these attacks to remain unaddressed, whether they are intended to hurt or draw attention, is to tacitly endorse the marginalization of our community, to accept being painted as perpetual foreigners, and to allow for the exotification and objectification of women of color.”

The statement urged the President of UC and the UCLA chancellor to support the students, demanded diversity within the ranks of staff and faculty, programs and initiatives that support diversity and the advancement of ethnic studies programs.

In 2011, the Alexandra Wallace library video mocking the accents and mannerism of Asian students at UCLA went viral, sparking outrage and a discussion of racism faced by Asian Americans.
