LA Times: Debate about ethnic studies erupts on Cal State LA campus

Cal State Los angelesStudents packed a meeting over ethnic studies requirement at Cal State LA and in a big switcharoo, faculty members tried to shout the students down with chants.

“Let them speak, let them speak,” the faculty members chanted during the meeting, report the Los Angeles Times.

The debate was over a proposal to make courses in the Ethnic Studies Department one of two required courses on diversity.

The same academic senate had rejected a similar proposal last month, but agreed to reconsider amidst protest from students.

The meeting ended without a vote. You can read reaction from both students and faculty in the Los Angeles Times.
