The Advocate: Vietnamese American salon owners charge discrimination

nail salonSalon owners in Louisiana are charging that state regulators are targeting Vietnamese Americans for selective enforcement, reports The Advocate.

The accusations of racial profiling and discrimination are being made in a lawsuit filed in federal court against the state Board of Cosmetology.

The Board says the charges are completely unfounded and claims it doesn’t collect or maintain any data about nationality.

“There is obviously some sort of racial profiling that’s going on,” said Joseph Cao, a former congressman whose law firm filed the suit.  “Something onerous is going on with the cosmetology board.”

The suit was filed on behalf of nine Vietnamese and Asian salon owners, but they hope  to get their case certified as a class action.

You can read about the concerns of the salon owners and response from the Board in The Advocate.
