Racist anti-Asian flyer circulates at University of Florida

University of Florida FlyerA racist anti-Asian flyer has been reported circulating on the University of Florida campus.

The director of Asian Pacific Islander American Affairs at UF, Alexander Cena, wrote an open letter to inform students of the discovery.

The flyers with the caption Happy Fortune Buffet written in chop suey font offered cash for dogs and referred people to a phone number which turned out to be a joke line.

“I want to remind people how offensive and ignorant signs like these are. Throughout history, Asians in America have struggled to create safe spaces where they can thrive and contribute to society. At different points in that history, we have been labelled as “threats” to this country. We have seen this in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the internment of Japanese Americans during WW2, and in the Post-9/11 era with South Asian Americans. We’ve been called “savage”, “uncivilized”, and “dangerous”. Today’s incident reminds me that the same ignorant sentiments still exist today.”

The bias incident has been reported to the University of Florida Police Department and it has expressed its commitment to “maintaining a safe and inclusive space for all students. ”

The incident comes weeks after a flyer sent to both USC and UCLA sparked outrage on those campuses.

A forum at UF is scheduled for today at 12:50 pm in room 408 at Peabody Hall.

  1. RE: Racist anti-Asian flyer circulates at University of Florida: It appears that most university adminatrations don’t know how to handle a crisis like this. There will be a APA student conference in Gainesville around mid April. Am sure this will be a heavily discussed topic since it is meant to be a regional conference. I hope someone from OCA locally or nationally will send a copy/manuel on how to deal with incidents like this. Perhaps UF students should get in touch with students in UCLA & USC to compare experiences. This will not be the last…
