A social media campaign is on to drop a derogatory term used for African Americans from the vocabulary of Muslim Americans, reports the Arab Daily News.
The #DropTheAWord campaign is targeting the word abed which means slave or servant.
Recently Muslim Americans formed the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative to deal with racism.
Other languages have derogatory terms for other races as well. In Cantonese, the terms Hak gwai and bak gwai mean black devil and white devil.
I am not familiar with similar campaigns in other ethnic groups. The Muslim American community deserves some credit for launching the #DropTheAWord campaign.
RE: Muslim American fight racism in own community: Unfortunately it takes a long time to drop the use of terms that offend, but this is a positive step forward.
