Angry Asian Man: Nothing anti-Asian about SCA5

UC BerkeleyA blog post by OiYan Poon in Angry Asian Man accuses opponents of SCA5 of spreading “lies, fears and hate” about what the amendment really is (photo by Nina Stawski).

SCA5 is a bill passed by the California Senate and now before the state Assembly. If passed, it would put a proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot that would reinstate the use of race as one criteria for admissions in state public universities.

Opponents have bombarded social media with the argument that SCA5 is discriminatory against Asian Americans.

Poon who is an assistant professor of Higher Education at Loyola University Chicago’s School of Education calls that BS.

She points out the Supreme Court has ruled in the 2013 ruling of Fisher v University of Texas that race can still be used as one of many factors in selective college admissions.

It is not the sole criteria.

Poon writes: “Not only would underrepresented Asian American and Pacific Islander students directly benefit from SCA 5, all Asian American students benefit from more diverse campus learning environments.”

She also argues that test scores are not neutral and unbiased. The SAT test is going through its third major change in ten years. Studies have found higher test scores don’t correlate to greater success in college, but it does correlate to higher economic class.

Poon urges Asian Americans upset about not getting into the school of their choice to fight budget cuts and for higher education, and stop blaming affirmative action.

You can read his full arguments in A blog post by OiYan Poon in Angry Asian Man.

What do you think? What do you think is the solution for greater diversity in education?

  1. RE: Nothing anti-Asian about SCA5: What about the irresponsibility of politicians who exploit anti-Asian sentiment as an inroad into public opinion under the pretense of affirmative action. Anti-SCA5 is not all about college admission, it’s about being invited to the decision making table.

There are misinformations on both side. Don’t drive the divisive wedge further into the Asian American community.

  2. RE: Nothing anti-Asian about SCA5: “He also argues that test scores are not neutral and unbiased.” – So race is neutral and unbiased?

“Studies have found higher test scores don’t correlate to greater success in college, but it does correlate to higher economic class.” – Then SCA5 should propose adimission to consider economic class instead of race.

Poon is suggesting without race, college only considers SAT, that is the biggest lie of all time.

  3. Here is a research paper on SCA5 – http://www.zhenzhubay.com/zzw/upload/up/2/da297a1….

Everybody in STEM field knows the importance to include reference/source. This paper has all references from UC/CSU and public high schools to back up his analysis. It is an eye opening analysis for root cause of Lation/Black’s low Berkeley/UCLA enrollment rate – high high school drop out and low A-G completion rates.

Sometimes it is hard to accept the truth. But if we don't work on root cause fix, we will still have the same problem 200 years later.
