I Love Newton: High school stages play filled with Asian American stereotypes

Thoroughly Modern MillieA production of Thoroughly Modern Millie at a local high school in Massachusetts will go on despite concerns about the stereotyping of Asian Americans in the play, reports Mia Wenjen in her blog for I Love Newton.

The play at Newton North High School in Newton, Massachusetts contains what Wenjen called “outdated Chinese stereotypes” such as “a Chinese laundry, a kidnapping for white slavery, bad Chinese accents, and a female actor in “white face” playing a white woman masquerading as a Chinese woman. Thoroughly Modern Milie

This is not the first time a high school has staged this outdated play. Wenjen says a school in Manhattan completely rewrote the play to remove the Chinese characters and references to white slavery before staging it.

The play is based on the 1967 movie of the same name.
