A Chinese American who escaped the Boston Marathon bombing suspects after being carjacked three days after the explosions is speaking about his ordeal for the first time, reports the Boston Globe.
He only wants to be identified as “Danny” for security reasons. Not only did he escape the carjackers after 75 terrifying minutes, he helped lead police to them.
A 27-year old software engineer, “Danny” shies away from the hero label.
“I’m still the same person. Even though this happened to me, it doesn’t change anything,” he said. “Sometimes when I look back, I feel it’s not my story, it’s like it’s somebody else’s story.”
He says he was held at gunpoint by Tamerlan Tsarnaev. He escaped when Tamerlan’s brother Dzhokhar went into the gas station to pay the bill and Tamerlan put down his gun to fidget with the navigation device.
Danny promptly alerted police that they could track the suspects through his navigation device. Authorities found the pair 20 minutes later.
“From my point, the definition of a hero is someone willing to sacrifice himself for somebody else,” he said. “I don’t know, I was trying to save my own life.”
