A leader in Chicago’s Chinatown and former aide to Mayor Richard Daley pleaded guilty this month to embezzling charity funds donated for a basketball tournament and cultural outreach, reports DNA Info.
Prosecutors say Gene Lee took $90,000 from the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association by under reporting donations.
Lee’s attorney says the money taken was much less than that and said he would prove that during sentencing.
Lee served for years as former mayor Richard Daley’s chief of staff.
