Korean Americans in the Bay Area are getting increasingly angry as more details emerge about the ferry that sank off the coast of South Korea and killed at least 32 people, mostly high school students, reports KQED.
Much of the anger is directed at the captain of the ferry, who’s been criticized for not ordering evacuations sooner and for being one of the first rescued off the ferry. Lee Joon-seok has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of negligence and abandoning people in need.
“They don’t understand how these kind of things can happen,” said Nam Hong, an editor with the Korean Times. “It didn’t sink right away, for two hours, so if they reacted fast then everybody could have gotten out.”
So Young Kim of the San Francisco Bay Area put it more bluntly in an interview with the Korea Times.
“He should have stayed in the ship saving people,” she said about the captain.
