Washington Blade: LGBT South Asian Americans applaud India Supreme Court decision to reconsider sodomy ruling

377 Members of the LGBT community worldwide are cheering an Indian Supreme Court decision to reconsider its ruling outlawing sodomy, reports the
Washington Blade

The ruling in December 2012 overturned a 2009 decision that decriminalized homosexuality in India and reinstated section 377 in the country’s penal code.

Today, the India Supreme Court in response to a petition from the Naz Foundation Trust to reconsider, agreed to hear oral arguments in the case.

The decision comes just one week after the court agreed to recognize transgenders as a third gender.

It is impossible to empower and protect transgender Indians while declaring the sexuality of so many of them to be criminal,” said Sapna Pandya, president of KhushDC, a South Asian American LGBT group.
