AAJA calls for retraction of column challenging legacy of Vincent Chin

Vincent ChinThe Asian American Journalists Association today called on the Detroit News to issue a retraction of a column by Neil Rubin which questioned the accuracy of the Vincent Chin story, a milestone moment in Asian American history.

The Chinese American was killed after being beaten with a baseball bat. It is widely believed that two men arrested for the murder, Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz, killed Chin because they thought he was Japanese and blamed him for the high unemployment in the US auto industry.

“How one columnist, using one source and little basis in fact or accuracy, could rewrite the history of a case that ignited the Asian American civil rights movement has understandably enraged many people,” wrote Paul Cheung, president of AAJA.

“We wish Rubin could take back his words. We think a retraction would be appropriate. At minimum, we ask for public acknowledgement that his piece was flawed. And we ask you to reach out to Asian Americans, in Detroit and beyond, to find different points of view. We also would  like an opportunity to discuss the matter with your newsroom leaders.”

The open letter to Mr. Jonathan Wolman, Editor & Publisher of  The Detroit News was also signed by Bobby Caina Calvan and Abe Kwok of AAJA’s media watch committee.

You can read the letter in its entirety at AAJA.
