NY Times: Asian American Pacific Islander children escape sizable increase in type 2 diabetes

bilingual health servicesA new study has found a significant increase in type 2 diabetes among children across all ethnic groups except one,  Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, reports the New York Times.

This is a pleasant surprise considering Asian Americans are twice as likely as the general population to get diabetes. 95 percent of diabetes cases among Asian Americans are for type 2 diabetes.

Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center in New York found type 1 diabetes increase 21 percent among children up to age 19. Type 2 diabetes increased 30 percent for ages 10 to 19.

Up to now, diabetes has largely been seen as an adult disease.

“In my career, Type 1 diabetes was a rare disease in children, and Type 2 disease didn’t exist. And I’m not that old,” said Dr. Robin S. Goland, co-director at the Berrie Center.
