KABC: Legacy of Heart Mountain comes out of shadows

Heart MountainABC7/KABC in Los Angles Saturday night aired during prime time the expanded one hour version of Legacy of Heart Mountain.

It’s the story of 10,000 Japanese Americans imprisoned in an incarceration camp outside Cody, Wyoming.

As news anchor David Ono put it, “seventy years ago, an internment camp filled with 10,000 Japanese Americans sat in the shadow of the mountain.”

Ono’s documentary puts their story out of the shadows and serves as a permanent record for the history books.

It’s one of four specials Ono has reported and produced about iconic events in the Asian American community in recent years.

Among those interviewed is Judge Lance Ito whose family was held there.

It’s also the story of Patti Hirahara’s father and grandfather who secretly documented their experience at Heart Mountain with photographs.
