NY Times: NYPD recruiting Muslim American spies

Queens, NYThe NY Times reports that New York Police Department’s unit known as the Debriefing Team continues to recruit Muslim American from jails and those suspects hauled in for questioning (photo from Queens, NY by Takomabibelot).

The practice started shortly after 9/11 and continues even after the NYPD disbanded its controversial surveillance unit.

The Times reports police conducted 220 interviews to gauge people’s willingness to ease drop on others in their community.

Although the interviews were considered voluntary, some of those told reporters they were shaken by the questioning.

“We were looking for people who could provide visibility into the world of terrorism,” said John Miller of the NYPD Intelligence Unit. “You don’t get information without talking to people.”
