Global News: British Columbia to formally apology to Chinese Canadians

posted by Randall

Chinese Canadians Canadian Pacific RailwayPremier Christy Clark today will formally apologize to Chinese Canadians in the British Columbia legislature, reports Global News (photo from bibilio archives/Library archives).

The apology will be for a head tax charged to Chinese immigrants to discourage them from coming to BC. That tax was collected from 1872 to 1947.

“I’m glad we finally got here,” said Clark. “The Chinese community hasn’t been waiting just since I became premier; the Chinese community has been waiting 100 years to hear these words in the legislature, and it’s about time they heard it.”

You can read about the long process that lead to the apology and what some Chinese Canadians are calling for in Global News.
