Asian Fortune: Washington Post accused of reinforcing stereotypes with two recent articles

Thomas Jefferson High, MarylandA blog in Asian Fortune says two recent headlines in the Washington Post paint broad strokes and reinforce stereotypes about Asian Americans.

The piece is by Surjeet Ahluwahlia, executive director of Asian American LEAD (Leadership, Empowerment and Development), a Maryland-based youth mentoring program.

The headlines read “Demographics shift at Thomas Jefferson High as Asians make up 66 percent of new class,” and “Why Asian American kids excel. It’s not ‘Tiger Moms.’”

Ahluwahlia is concerned both articles ignore the facts that Asian Americans are not an homogenous group and that some low income students don’t get the support they need to excel.

She also points out that while some Asian Americans subgroup on average perform well academically, not all the subgroups do.

What do you think? Do articles like the ones in the Washington Post do a disservice to the community?
