Center for American Progress: Language access critical in Asian American community

Center for American Progress report on English language proficiencyA new report from the Center for American Progress found more than 1 out of 3 Asian Americans describe themselves as not speaking English very well.

77 percent of  Asian Americans  speak a language other than English at home. That’s the highest proportion of any ethnic group, according to the report.

Chinese is the most widely spoken Asian language, followed by Tagalog, Vietnamese and Korean.

There are eight different groups of South Asians, with 2. 8 million of them speaking a South Asian language.

Japanese, Vietnamese and Indian Americans are the least likely to speak a language other than English at home.

The report concluded that language access has important implications for civic engagement and voter participation among Asian Americans.

This report on language access is part of a larger report released earlier this year on the State of Asian America.
