Phys.org: Model minority stereotypes disproportionately hurts Asian American men

Money & dollarsAsian American men who don’t graduate from high school or obtain a college degree earn 24 percent less than similarly educated white men, reports Phys.org.

Researchers from the University of Kansas and Texas A&M attribute that to the model minority stereotype of Asian Americans as excelling in education.

ChangHwan Kim and Arthur Sakamoto say the stereotype especially hurts Asian American men who don’t fit that mold.

“The penalty of being Asian American in terms of earnings becomes larger as their actual situation is further away from the model minority image,” Kim said. “Therefore, the model minority image of Asian Americans is not necessarily positive but destructive for those who do not fit to this image.”
