XO Jane: Elliott Rodger makes me scared to have kids

Kristina Wong put those feelings into words  for XO Jane recently following the UC Santa Barbara killings.

“I have to wonder if my hypothetical child will be safe when I send them to school, or worse, if despite my best efforts, they become a mass murderer,” writes Wong.

She goes on to list six fears she has of raising kids, one of which is “my child will hate being Asian or part Asian.”

These anxieties are not unique to Asian Americans. I’ve heard others express similar sentiments.

It’s a decision that should not be taken lightly. Yet its something that should not be feared.

Instead of dwelling on the six fears, would be parents should consider these six factors:

  •  Raising a child is a privilege, not a rite of passage.
  •  Raising a child is not a stage in life, its a real responsibility that should be taken seriously.
  •  Raising a child is not an easy job, but it can be an exhilarating and rewarding one.
  •  Raising a child can be frustrating, but know that those frustrations will give way to milestone moments for   both you and your child
  • Raising a child is ultimately the most important job you will ever accept
  • Raising a child can be one of the most joyous moments of your life

In essence raising a child is a gift to your child, yourself and the world.
