The Examiner reports a fraternity at UC Irvine charged with cultural appropriation is comprised mostly South and East Asian Americans (photo from Phi Gamma Delta website).
Whites appear to be a minority in Phi Gamma Delta based on a membership list on the group’s own website.
Members of UC Irvine’s small Pacific Islander student community are demanding that Phi Gamma Delta drop its nickname Fiji and end its fundraiser because it is “culturally unacceptable.”
They are also asking the fraternity to end all practices of “acts of cultural appropriation that hurt marginalized People of Color communities because they maintain and fortify white male hegemonic structures.”
According to the University, there are just 28 students on campus who identity as Pacific Islander.
