According to the Los Angeles Times, the Pacific Islander singer was at a dinner party put on by her best friend, reality star Kylie Jenner.

It was during dinner that she was put on the spot and asked to sing acapella her cover of Drake’s Hold On.

In attendance that night was Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Drake himself. Kardashian recorded the little performance.

The clip took off on social media and Perez received the notoriety that has alluded her since she began singing at age 8 on her native island of Guam.

Shortly after that she released the video of her debut single, Red Love.

“I’m not afraid to share my experiences. I never want to be offensive to anybody in doing that, but I’m here to speak for what’s really going on in the world for teenagers, who maybe don’t have a voice to say what they are going through,” she said. “Maybe they don’t know what they are going through is normal.

“‘Red Love’ was a little bit of an awkward one to write. It’s a really close song to my heart,” Perez said. “The song wasn’t about debating whether or not to take your relationship further. It’s about how you took it as far as you wanted to — and you kind of regretted it after.”

She has since signed a deal with Interlope Records.
