Mental health remains challenge in Asian American community

SuicideDealing with mental health issues in the Asian American community with cultural sensitivity and opening up access to resources remain huge challenges, says the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (photo by David Diaz).

A forum was help prior to the tragedy at Isla Vista, but the mass killings certainly adds urgency to any follow up that may be needed.

One Vietnamese American woman said tragedies from the Vietnam War continue to cause trauma across generations in her community.

A Japanese American woman shared the common story of the shame her family felt following the suicide of their cousin and the denial that permeated her family .

Another Japanese American woman told of her schizophrenia and how she lacked a sense of belonging.

The group is focusing its effort in four areas–data collection, integrated care, community engagement and worker training.
