Philly.com: What an Asian American teacher learned from her African American students

studentsCathy Kang learned first hand the power of cross cultural communication (file photo by Bart Everson).

The young teacher is a 2012 Teach for America Greater Philadelphia Corp Member.

Her first assignment was with a class of 25 African American students to teach 10th-grade English at Delaware Valley Charter High School in Philadelphia.

The Korean American recalls struggling herself to learn English, but with the encouragement of English and foreign language teachers, went on to graduate from the College of William and Mary with degrees in English and French.

Now there she was facing a group of 15-year olds trying to find a way to connect with them.

The story she tells in her blog for Philly.com is a heartwarming one and a lesson in the power of language.

It’s worth a read.
