ABS CBN: Family speaks out about pitbulls that mauled boy

Steven HayashiA  man whose three pitbulls fatally mauled his step grandson Jacob Bisbee four years ago will be sentenced Friday for the boy’s death, reports ABS CBN.

Steven Hayashi of Redwood City, CA faces 10 years in prison after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment.

Hayashi asked that a family friend speak on his behalf in advance of the sentencing.

Peter Purificacion says Hayashi is a loving man who deeply cares for his family. He says he took in Jacob and his family into his home out of concern for their welfare.

Purificcacion says Jacob’s father, Michael Bisbee, is really the negligent one.

“That’s one thing that Steven is guilty of — adopting, opening your arms to somebody who you know is not capable of protecting their family,” said Purificacion.

The family says Hayashi has no history of violence and does not have a prior criminal record. They say he does not deserve to go to prison for what they call an accident.

But the District Attorney says Hayashi knew his dogs were dangerous and did nothing to protect Jacob and other children from the dogs.
