Two years after the La Jolla Theater in San Diego endured intense criticism for white washing a play that took place in China, it will be staging The Orphan of Zhao, report Theater Mania.
The play which has its world premier this weekend at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco features a largely Asian American cast (photo by Drama Leauge).
It stars BD Wong of Law & Order fame and Marie-France Arcilla as The Princess, Stan Egi as Tu’an Gu, Philip Estrera as Chu Ni/Ghost of Cheng Ying’s Son, Nick Gabriel as Zhao Dun, Cindy Im as Princess’s Maid, Orville Mendoza as Wei Jiang, Paolo Montalban as The Ballad Singer/The Emperor, Brian Rivera as Demon Mastiff/General Han Jue, Sab Shimono as Gongsun Chujiu, Julyana Soelistyo as Cheng Ying’s Wife, andDaisuke Tsuji as Ti Miming/Cheng Bo.
It plays July 8 to August 3 in San Diego.
