Financial Buzz: Are hate crimes against Asian Americans on rise?

Randy Gener 56-year-old Robert Matirez is on life support in a New York City hospital after a 20-year old man asked if he was Filipino and then hit him in the face–sending him hard to the pavement, reports the Financial Buzz. (Update: Matirez has died and the Philippine Consulate disputes reports this incident was racially motivated)

Last month, 68-year-old Wen Hui Ruan was attacked and killed in Manhanttan while walking his grandchild home.

Earlier this year, Filipino American gay journalist (pictured) Randy Gener was beaten as he walked home from a party in New York. The man arrested was not charged with a hate crime although many urged the district attorney to do so.

Are hate crimes against Asian Americans on the rise?  President Obama made note of it in his message for Asian Pacific American Heritage month.

The Financial Buzz speculates it might  because of “jealousy.” What do you think?
