Angry Asian Man: Teachers idea of fun deemed racially offensive

AP T shirts1Sometimes you have to wonder whose teaching our kids.

Asian Americans and other minorities often complain about the Eurocentric focus of our educational system.

Here’s an example of why diversity in education and in the ranks of our teachers is so important.

Teachers and professors who teach advance placement courses, those are courses taught to  advanced college bound high school students, decided it would be fun to produce a t-shirt with stereotypical characters of Asians plastered on it.

Angry Asian Man reports it took place at Educational Testing Service’s (ETS)  annual AP World History Reading earlier this month in Salt Lake City.AP T-Shirts

As you might imagine, there’s been some backlash to the t-shirts and now ETS has issued a statement distancing itself from the t-shirts while at the same time denouncing the actions of the teachers.

“It is unacceptable that one of the AP Exam Readers created a T-shirt that mocked historical events that were the cause of great pain and suffering, and promulgated racist stereotypes that further marginalize a racial minority. Furthermore, it is entirely inappropriate that references to the AP Program were combined with language and images that make light of a deeply tumultuous period in Chinese history. When some teachers expressed their concerns, others hastily dismissed such perspectives, and proceeded to distribute the T-shirts regardless. All of this was a clear violation of the high standards for respect and dignity that we require and expect at the AP Reading, and ETS and the College Board are deeply apologetic for the distribution of the T-shirt and for the toxic environment it created.

As a result of these findings and the unquestionably poor judgment they reveal, the College Board has asked ETS to discipline any responsible individuals. In addition, we will convene opportunities for the AP World History community to reflect on these circumstances and reestablish the collegiality the AP community expects and deserves.”

  1. RE: Teachers idea of fun deemed racially offensive: Please do not place blame on the teachers, or call into question our integrity or ability to teach. I am an AP reader and a high school teacher. We do not get to see the design of the T-shirt before we order one–in fact, we don’t see it until the second to last day of the reading. We are not all “in cahoots” in designing it, either. Please do not place a blanket of blame on all of us by making comments such as “Teachers and professors who teach advance placement courses, those are courses taught to advanced college bound high school students, decided it would be fun to produce a t-shirt with stereotypical characters of Asians plastered on it.” I had nothing to do with this.
