ULoop: The blockbuster mentality that keeps Asian Americans from getting leading roles

TransformersThis weekend’s top grossing movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction,  took in $100 million.

It’s this drive by Hollywood to always produce the next big blockbuster that keeps Asian Americans from getting lead roles, according to a blog in ULoop by Alex Wen.

According to Wen, Asian Americans cast in strong lead roles would go against the stereotype of what the audience has been conditioned to expect from Asian American characters.

Upsetting the apple cart, so to speak, would be a big risk for any Hollywood executive. It’s one they would not expect to be rewarded with with big cash dividends.
