Marla Hirokawa, Hawaiian-born Sansei and the artistic director of Covenant Ballet Theater of Brooklyn and CBT Dance Academy, will present her ballet on the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat team of World War II at the New York Fringe Festival, reports Discover Nikkei.
Nisei originally debut in 2001. This will be the third time its been presented.
The story is based on the life of Marla’s late father, Lawrence Yoji Hirokawa. For this performance, Hirokawa has added songs from Jake Shimabukuro and singer/songwriter Harold Payne.
Hirokawa needs to raise $35,000 for the performances in August, but has so far only raised about $4,000 of the $35,000 needed. You can find out more about Nisei in Discover Nikkei and the fundraising campaign at Fundanything.com.
