LA Times: Orange County now has nation’s third largest Asian American population

Garden GroveThe third largest population of Asian Americans in the nation is now in Orange County, reports the LA Times.  600,000 Asian Americans now live in the OC. That’s a 41 percent increase since the 2000 census (photo by Eugene Kim).

Using primarily census numbers, the study was compiled by the Orange County Asian Pacific Islander Community Alliance and Asian Americans Advancing Justice in Los Angeles.

Orange County first began attracting Vietnamese Americans to Little Saigon–mostly to Garden Grove and Westminster. But Chinese, Filipinos, and Koreans have spread north and south of there. The number of Pacific Islanders has grown 17 percent in the last decade.

On a down note, 57,000 Asian Americans and 1,700 Pacific Islanders in the county are living in poverty.

You can read about the impact of Asian Americans in Orange County in the LA Times.
