Al Jazeera: Muslim & Arab Americans tired of being under suspicion

Take on Hate A new campaign entitled Take on Hate has been launched to counter bias and prejudice against Muslim and Arab Americans in New York City, reports Al Jazeera.

The $4.5 million campaign is funded by the Open Society Foundation and the Proteus Fund with the goals of achieving public policy changes, educating the public and giving community activists a platform to battle discrimination.

“The worse things get in the Middle East, the worse things get for Arab Americans here in the US. Every time there is something serious in the Middle East, things spike,” Samer Khalaf, president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), said. “People get attacked and beaten for doing nothing but appearing Muslim.”

“There is a fear stronger than ever before of Muslims – not just Muslims, but American Muslims,” said Jack Shaheen, a documentary producer. “It has spilled over to the political arena and gotten worse.”

You can find out more about the challenges Take on Hate hopes to overcome in Al Jazeera.
