Wendy Banta-Long is an adoptee from China (graphic by Jon Nicholls).
The young woman recently graduated from high school in Indiana and has already learned that although she identifies as a Chinese American, others will also identify her as a foreigner.
She wrote about her own identity and the way others identify her in a blog for NWI.com.
She separates the identity inside her and the external identity that others may perceive. Ideally, she concludes, her internal identity will match her external one.
Banta-Long has a maturity that belies her age. You can read her thoughts on identity in NWI.com.
