Maxine Hong KingstonThe White House has announced that best selling author Maxine Hong Kingston will be among those Americans honored by President Obama with a National Medal of Arts.

Hong Kingston will be awarded the medal July 28 in the East Room of the White House “for her contributions as a writer. She is best known for her memoir The Women Warrior. The National Medal of Arts is the highest award given to artists and art patrons from the US government to people “deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts in the United States.”Phoenix Art Museum designed by Billie Tsien

Also being honored are Billie Tsien and Tod Williams. The two architects have been teamed up since 1986 and focus on designing museums, schools and other works for non-profits. Their use of light, texture and detail in their building add to the experience. Among their designs is the Phoenix Art Museum (pictured).
