NBC: Three year voyage by Polynesians dedicated to care for Our Earth

Polynesian Voyaging SocietyA crew from the Polynesian Voyage Society in Hawaii has set sail on a three year journey dedicated to Malama Honua or “care for our earth,” reports NBC‘s Amy Lieu.

They plan to cover some 47,000 nautical miles, 85 ports, and 26 countries during their trek to bring their message of protecting our oceans.

“Marine scientists recommend that some 30 percent of the oceans should be fully protected through marine reserves to maintain ocean health and resilience,” said Donatien Tanret of Global Ocean Legacy. “Currently, less than 1 percent is fully protected.”

GOL and the Friends of Hōkūle‘a Association are calling for the protection of French Polynesian Waters and their 1,024 fish species and 176 coral.

Never before has a voyage of its kind and of this length been conducted. You can read more about what they hope to accomplish on NBC.
