CBS: Bid to stop Friday’s special election in Hawaii fails

Colleen HanabusaAn effort by Colleen Hanabusa to stop Friday’s special election in the Democratic race for the US Senate in Hawaii has failed, reports CBS.

A judge rejected a lawsuit by Hanabusa who argued roads were still closed and power out in the two precincts and that it was too soon after the storm for an election.

Hanabusa trails Brian Schatz by 1635 votes.

The primary was held Saturday, but due to the heavy storm that hit the island, two precincts were unable to vote.

Originally voters in the two precincts  were to receive a mail ballot and would be given three weeks to return them, but those plans have change

The two candidates are vying to finish out the remaining two years of late Senator Daniel Inouye’s term. Inouye’s dying wish was for the Governor to appoint Hababusa, but Neil Abercrombie chose Schatz instead until an election could be held.

Hanabusa says she will not appeal the judge’s ruling.
