13 –year-old Matthew Liu is an accomplished pianist, artist, and athlete. He is also autistic, and one of the youngest triathletes to take part in the recent Special Olympics USA games in Princeton, N.J.
His journey to the podium has been anything but easy – especially for his parents, recent immigrants from China . Matthew’s mom talks to Asian American Life’s newest correspondent Minnie Roh about the stigma associated with an intellectual disability, and how Matthew conquered his many challenges to become a gold medal winning athlete and compete with other Special Olympians nationwide.
For more on Matthew’s journey watch the latest edition of CUNY-TV’s Asian American Life.
