KTRK: Asian American Family Services Organization at Risk of Closing

Asian American Family ServicesA Houston-based non-profit that has been serving the Asian American community for decades will close their doors unless they can raise $100,000 in the next 30 days, reports KTRK.

In the twenty years since it first opened, Asian American Family Services has served tens of thousands of people with programs ranging from senior support groups for immigrants to mental health initiatives. AAFS clients are mostly Asian — Vietnamese, Chinese and Korean — and staff are well-versed in a variety of Asian languages and cultures.

“We’ve done psychiatric services in their native tongues,” said AAFS Board President Shaukat Zakaria to KTRK. “So, it’s not just about providing general psychiatric services, but it’s knowing the culture the client is coming from.”

In recent years, AAFS has been unable to secure many of the grants necessary to sustain the organization. Part of the reason is because more and more non-profit organizations are competing for the same funds, which in turn are diminishing on the federal, state and local levels, according to AAFS CEO Daniel Stoecker.

AAFS is down to its last dollars, according to Zakaria.

The organization hopes to raise $100,000 by September 30 in order to keep running for the thousands of clients who need their services.

“It gave us the tools to take care of ourselves and take care of each other,” said one client about AAFS.
