LA Times: USC Works to Assure Chinese Parents About Student Safety After Murder

University of Southern CaliforniaA top administrator from the University of Southern California met with parents in three Asian cities to alleviate their concerns about campus safety in the wake of three murders of Chinese students in two years.

The Los Angeles Times reports the meeting took place in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong with Katharine Harrington, vice president of admissions.

More than 3600 Chinese students were enrolled at USC in 2013. That’s more than any other university in the country. Harrington assured parents that the Chinese students were not targeted.

“Living in Los Angeles or any big American city is probably very different than living in China,” Harrington told the Beijing parents. “You can remind your children that safety is a partnership, and the choices they make are important.”

That was similar to comments made in an email by USC President  C. L. Max Nikias who wrote “we must all take responsibility for our own safety by utilizing the resources available and making smart choices.”

But not all parents are convinced.

“I just don’t believe that the university authorities pay enough attention, seriously enough, with the safety issues,” said one mother. “I know USC has a very high reputation. I hope that the safety and security can match that high reputation.”

Some blame the safety issues on a cultural gap. You can read about that in the Los Angeles Times.

  1. RE: USC works to assure Chinese parents about campus safety: Wonder if the violence on campus is connected to those 2 racist letters sent to UCLA & USD this past academic school year….
