California Attorney General Kamala Harris got married in a small private ceremony to attorney Douglas Emhoff, reports the American Bazaar.
The wedding was performed at the Santa Barbara courthouse August 22 by Kamala’s sister Maya. Emhoff is a partner in the firm Venable LLP. The couple has been engaged for five months.
During their unpublicized ceremony, each followed traditional customs.
Harris placed a flower garland around the groom’s neck, a common practice in Indian weddings and Emhoff smashed a glass, a tradition in Jewish weddings.
Harris’s mother is Dr. Shyamala Gopalan who immigrated from Chennai, India. Her father is Donald Harris, a Jamaican American.
