Report Finds Many Americans Remain Under Suspicion & Attack

SAALT Report South Asian, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Middle Eastern, and Arab communities continue to live under a climate of suspicion and fear, according to a just released report from SAALT, South Asian Americans Living Together.

The report says political figures and government leaders continue to subject those communities to “xenophobic rhetoric” and that the amount of rhetoric has increased since 2010, the last time SAALT released a similar report.

Between January 2011 and April 2014, SAALT documented 78 instances of xenophobic political speech and 76 examples of hate violence. It concludes that many have been denied their first amendment rights.

On the positive side, the SAALT reports indicates there are many examples of leaders shifting the dialogue away hate and “to raise national awareness on
local surveillance, spur legislative and political change, and develop an effective social media campaign to impact discriminatory policing.”

The report calls on the President to create a national task force to prevent hate violence, rigorously enforce hate crime legislation, revise Justice Department guidelines from 2003 about the use of race by Federal Law Enforcement and end suspicionless and discriminatory surveillance of communities by law enforcement agencies.
