Vox: Korean Dramas Growing in Popularity

Drama FeverThe popularity of Korean dramas in the United States is no longer just a Korean American phenomenon.

Vox reports that the streaming service Drama Fever which was launched for a target audience of Korean Americans has turned out to be much bigger than that.

The company says 85 percent of its audience is non-Asian. In fact 45 percent are Caucasian and 25 percent Latino.

“All types of ethnicities are seeking out foreign content” because it “speaks to them more than … traditional television,” said Suk Park who co-founded Drama Fever.
“When we started five years ago, we thought our audience was going to be Korean-American, but we couldn’t have been more wrong.”

Drama Fever now has 20 million monthly unique visitors.
