Where Do Asian Americans Fit into Discussions About Race?

CATEGORIES

multicultural celebration Anassa Kata raises an interesting question affecting many Asian Americans. Where do members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities fit into discussions about race?

The Bryn Mawr college senior in Pennsylvania raised the issue after a recent protest by 500 students of color on campus.

She says the model minority stereotype means Asian Americans on campus are often excluded from discussions about race.

Kata writes:

“We hear so many issues being raised by other minority groups, but we almost never hear about any issues concerning the Asian American students on campus. The recent events that have happened got me thinking – Why is it that we don’t hear from Asian American students, about their concerns as a minority? It could be lack of interest, or the fact that students are less vocal.”

How is Kata’s experience similar or different from your own?
