US News & World Report: China Fears Hong Kong Protest Could Catch Fire on Mainland

Hong Kong Protest The protestors in Hong Kong are beginning to generate support in other parts of the world.

In Los Angeles, 500 protestors marched in support of the pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong, reports KPCC.

3,000 people did the same thing in London, according to the BBC.

In Washington, the White House issued a statement in support of the “aspirations of the Hong Kong people,” reported Time.

But world opinion is not what Chinese officials in Beijing are worried about most. According to US News & World Report, they fear the Hong Kong protest spreading to the mainland.

“What happens in Hong Kong today could happen nationwide tomorrow,” says Cheng Li, director of the John L. Thornton China Center at The Brookings Institution think tank. “Hong Kong’s general public is taking place in this protest. Lots of economic classes are involved, especially the low classes. Beijing will have a harder time convincing people the protests are instigated by a Western conspiracy.”

Censorship of the internet in China is said to be at an all time high.

Chinese President “Xi’s administration is stricter all across the board on speech,” Mi Ling Tsui, communications director for Human Rights in China said. “They specifically declare, ‘we have to clean up the Internet.’
