Bloomberg: Pay Gap Hits Asian Americans in Silicon Valley

Silicon ValleyWe hear a lot about gender wage disparities between men and women. For every dollar earned by men in the United States, women earn 81 cents.

Bloomberg reports there’s a racial pay gap for Asian Americans in Silicon Valley.

The American Institute for Economic Research found Asian Americans in Silicon Valley earn less than women, less than whites, less than blacks and less than those listed as “other.”

Asian Americans earn $8,146 less in annual wages than their white counterparts, $3,656 less than blacks and $6,907 less than “others.”

Bloomberg doesn’t break down the disparity between Asian Americans than women, but a chart in USA Today shows Asian American men earn $1,788 dollars less than white women. Asian American women earn $8,146 less than white women.

A lot was made about how Asian Americans made up a significant portion of the workforce in Silicon Valley.

It’ll be interesting to see if the wage gap experienced by Asian Americans in Silicon Valley gets equal play. Somehow I doubt it.

You can read about how all this translates for Asian Americans and the bamboo ceiling and read some of Jeff Yang’s thoughts on all this in Bloomberg.
