There’s been a lot of talk this year about Republicans expanding their tent and reaching out to Asian Americans and other minorities.
Mother Jones reports the Asian Republican Coalition formed to boost that effort has endorsed just 5 candidates–four are white and one is Asian American, Republican candidate for governor in Rhode Island, Allan Fung (pictured).
“These candidates believe in creating and building upon strong relationships within the comprehensive Asian American community,” said John Ying, an Asian American investment banker based in Hong Kong and the group’s chairman.
When the Asian Republican Coalition held a kick off party, Ying was the only Asian American present. Everyone else was white.
“The Asian Republican Coalition is open to all Americans, including Asian Americans and those of us like me who are not ethnically Asian but have spent 20 years living in Hong Kong,” Ying explained.
